Holiday Type: National

Where is celebrated: USA

National Repeal Day celebrates the passing of the Eighteenth Amendment which outlawed Alcohol. On this day, we celebrate our constitutional rights to consume alcoholic beverages. The Eighteenth Amendment was passed on January 16, 1919. This put an end to Prohibition. The prohibition period of alcohol began in the early 19th century.

Prohibition began due to concerns over the effects of drinking such as disorderly conduct. One negative effect of prohibition was the increase of organized crime. This was proliferated by large Scale bootleggers including Al Capone. Al Capone was a gangster in the 1920s that built an empire out of illegal distribution. Billions were lost in tax revenue by federal and state governments.
