Advent is a 4 week period where Christians prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus (Christmas) and for some Christian denominations the possible return of Jesus via his Second Coming. The Second Sunday of Advent is a period which for many Christians represents the hope of Christ coming to the world.

It is a tradition in many churches to light one of four Advent candles for each week of Advent. The candle for the second Sunday of Advent symbolizes hope and is purple. This candle is also known as the Prophecy Candle. This is in reference to the prophet Isaiah who foretold the birth of Christ. The Second Sunday of Advent is observed by many Christians by praying, fasting, and doing good deeds.
